This is a magic mountains.

The snow-white pearl among the boundless sea of a taiga, fairy Belukha is not just a mountain, object for climbing. This is alive beating heart of Altai, the place of extreme power.

In July and August, the alpine meadows are in luxuriant bloom. There you can meet Siberian wapiti (red deer), musk deer, brown bear, sable, Siberian weasel, squirrel, chipmunk, Siberian ibex (mountain goat). The elusive snow leopard and the Altai snow cock also make a home of these lands. The tour takes us to the west and east parts of the Katunsky ridge: to the canyons of Kucherla and Ak-Kem rivers. Mountain passes provide extensive panoramas of the Katunsky Ridge and ice-covered Belukha Mountain.

The Kucherla river is one of the most lovely mountain rivers of the Katunsky ridge and has milky blue water. One of the sides of the Kucherla gorge is forest-steppe with larch and stone ridges, while cedars and firs cover the opposite side. Higher along the route, there are cedar pine forests and alpine meadows.

Another famous lake we will visit is the Akkem lake. It is not very big, but its waters reflect the peak and glaciers of Mount Belukha. These places are a real Mekka for mountaineers and artists.

To make the trek easier, the pack horses will carry the camp equipment and major food supply. The tour requires the middle physical fitness and basic backpacking experience.

Brief Outline Itinerary

You will fly to either of Barnaul (Russian Altai region) via Moscow or to Olgii (Mongolian Altai). There are a number of extension trips in westernmost Mongolia. Flight connections are best negotiated with Russian Aeroflot Airlines who fly on-line to both Barnaul/GornoAltaisk and Ulaanbaatar (ULN). The trip is vehicle supported and we will make use of the small and intimate Hotel Rublevka, situated directly on the banks of the Katun River and the Blue Wolf Ger Camp in Olgii. During trekking on Belukha Mountain, there will be tented camping, and cooks and guide brought along for the journey.

The border crossing at Tashanta (Russian Altai) and Tsaagannuur (Mongolian Altai) is open for third country nationals as of 2005 only.

The Tsengel Hairhan Mountain is a standalone eternally snow-capped mountain, located on the way towards Big Lakes- Hoton and Hurgan. Only few hours drive from Olgii and you reach the mountain. In this remote region the traditional way of life has remained un- disturbed and there are many nomads of different ethnic minorities residing. For example the Kazakhs who are Muslims and the Tuvans who are Buddhist and shamanistic. This rock outcropping is the prominent feature beside the Tsengel Hairhan Glacier. You’ll be rewarded by great views, looking to the glacier. Your panorama will include remote views of the TsambaGarav and Twin Peaks behind you and the Altai Tavan Bogd Peaks to the front.

The heart of the Altai mountains

Altai Eagle Festival with Aisholpan

Meet Kazakh ethnic group

$2700

Discover the biggest nomadic and largest country in the world – rich diversity of nomadic culture in the regions

Trek to Altai Tavan Bogd Mountains

Meet Kazakh ethnic group and opportunity to watch Eagle hunting

To see rare/endangered animals like snow leopard, ibex etc

Amazing nature and unique people with great hospitality

Historical sightseeing

Shared accommodation at Ger camps

Private transfers

English speaking guide

All meals as listed

All entrance fee

Horse, camel ride

Mongolian barbecue

Letter of Invitation

Visit Eagle Hunter and his family

Border and nat. park permits

ULG-ULN flight

Overnights at 4* hotel in Gorno-Altaisk and UB.

Prices: As we’ll customize your journey based on your preferences and needs, please note that this indicative price is just a rough estimate. It is just a guideline and can be tailored according to your comfort level, interests and preferences for every detail from accommodation to activities.

Health: Travellers to Mongolia should ensure that they are up-to-date with routine vaccination courses and it may be advised that further vaccines are sought. Please talk to a health professional 4 – 6 weeks before travelling. It is recommended that most travellers are vaccinated for Hepatitis A and Tetanus but it is also worth discussing Hep B, Typhoid, Meningitis, Tuberculosis, Tick-borne Encephalitis and Rabies.

Long bumpy rides: Be prepared for some epic long car rides in some old school furgons (Russian UAZ vans). As few of the vans have speakers or a method of playing music, you might like to bring along your own portable speakers and an MP3 player (but bear in mind others may like to enjoy the serenity!) It is not unheard of for people to feel a little travel sick, so if you are prone to this, remember to bring your tablets and feel free to ask your guide/driver to stop as frequently as you wish.

Guide:
An English speaking Mongolian guide will accompany the group at all times. Single and twin/double occupancy at ger camps require an extra supplement.

The best time to make this trip
May to September is the best season, with the peak season in July for the Naadam Festival. July and August are also the wettest months of the year, but be assured, our climate is such that you will still have many sunny days at this time.

Accommodation:
We believe that comfortable, welcoming accommodation is vital to the enjoyment of your trip.
